Police Officer Shoots Gunman In Self-Defense

DETROIT (WWJ) - A gunman aims his weapon at Detroit Police officers -- and one of the officers opens fire in apparent self-defense.

The incident happened around 7pm Thursday night on the city's east side, after a gunman threatened individuals inside a home on Cody -- near the Davison Freeway and Conant, on the Detroit-Hamtramck border. Police were called out, and they tracked down the suspect about five blocks away at a home on Mitchell Street.

"They observed the suspect. He had a bulge in the right side, he fit the description of the individual wanted," says Detroit Police spokesman Adam Madera.

Madera says the suspect ran into the house -- with officers in pursuit.

"Went to investigate the suspect, he attempted to run into his house. The scouts went after him. Once inside the location, there was a struggle that occurred," says Madera.

And that's when the gunman pulled out his weapon and aimed it at police.

"The suspect removed a handgun from his side and then he began to turn towards the officers to point the weapon at them. One of the officers discharged their weapon, striking the individual," says Madera.

Madera says the suspect's injuries, at this time, are unknown. Michigan State Police are assisting in the investigation.
