Standoff Ends Without Incident As Police Arrest Man Wanted On Several Warrants

DETROIT (WWJ) - A standoff lasting nearly four hours ends without incident on the city's west side.

Two officers reportedly tried to arrest the 25-year-old suspect, who was wanted on multiple felony warrants, when he armed himself.

Detroit police were trying to talk an armed man out of a home on Cabot street, near Michigan Ave. and Wyoming, when he went up on the roof of an abandoned home armed with a weapon.

"He's armed with a flare gun that's modified to shoot, not only .22 caliber rounds but also shotgun blasts as well -- so the officers have him surrounded - tight perimeter he's now come to the roof of the location," police told WWJ's Sandra McNeill during the standoff.

There were no reports of shots fired or any injuries at the scene as the man came down from the roof without any shots being fired.

His mother, Rachel Gibson, says her son is a "good person" but is going through a hard time.

"He had drug addition and mental illness," said his mother. "He's in a bad situation right now."

The suspect had a car jacking conviction dating back over a decade.
