Police: Mom Teams Up With 7-Year-Old To Shoplift At Walmart

DEARBORN (WWJ) - A 41-year-old woman was arrested after she apparently used her 7-year-old son to help steal several items from a metro Detroit Walmart.

The incident happened around 9:45 p.m. last Tuesday at the Walmart on Mercury Drive, just off the Southfield Freeway and Ford Road in Dearborn.

Police say store security officers watched as the woman allegedly took several electronic items out of their packaging and concealed them in her son's pockets. The woman also apparently tried to hide several items underneath the boy, who was seated in a shopping cart.

The woman took her cart through the checkout line, but only paid for some of her merchandise, according to police. She was stopped by Walmart's loss prevention officers as she tried leaving the store. She reportedly had more than $50 worth of stolen merchandise in her possession.

Police responded and placed the woman under arrest for retail fraud and aiding a child to violate the law.  The 7-year-old was released to the custody of his grandfather.
