Police: Man Struck And Killed While Trying To Run Across Gratiot

CHESTERFIELD TWP. (WWJ) - Police say a Roseville man was attempting to run across Gratiot Ave. Sunday evening when he was hit by a car and killed.

It happened shortly after 6 p.m. on the northbound side of Gratiot, south of 21 Mile Rd., in Chesterfield Township.

Police say witnessed called 911 to report the accident, and 60-year-old Ricky Jay Baker was found lying in the roadway, critically injured. He was taken by EMS to McLaren Macomb Hospital where he died a short time later.

Police say the 28-year-old Columbiaville, Michigan man whose car struck the victim did pull over at the scene. He told investigators that the man ran out directly in front of his vehicle and he was unable to stop or swerve in time to avoid him. Witnesses gave similar accounts.

Although an investigation is ongoing, police believe alcohol, drugs, and speed do not appear to be factors. No charges have been filed.
