Police: Man Shoots At Off-Duty Cop Outside Detroit Store

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - An off-duty Detroit police officer escaped injury when he shot at outside a convenience store on the city's west side.

Detroit police said the officer had just left the store, in the area of Dexter and Davidson, Sunday night and was in his personal vehicle when a young man approached him and fired five shots.

Police said that while the officers wasn't struck, his vehicle was — with WXYZ-TV reporting one bullet pierced the windshield and another hit the car door.

Officer Dan Donakowski told The Detroit News that "words were exchanged" before the shooting and that the man who fired the shots was apparently upset that the officer had been talking to the suspect's sister.

The shooter, who is believed to be in his 20s, fled the scene on foot.

Police say a person of interest was taken into custody for questioning on Sunday in connection with the incident. His name has not been released.

The shooting remains under investigation.
