Police: Man Fires Gun At Sleeping Wife Before Turning Weapon On Self

BERLIN TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - Police are investigating what appears to be an attempted murder-suicide at a Monroe County mobile home park.

The situation unfolded just before 5 a.m. Saturday in the 2100 block of Joey Canyon Drive at the Newport Farms Manufactured Housing Community in Berlin Township.

Police say a 55-year-old woman was awoken by her husband who, for unknown reasons, fired one bullet from a gun, striking her in the neck. The woman and her adult daughter fled the home and called 911 while her husband remained inside.

Sheriff's deputies surrounded the home and evacuated nearby residents while attempting to make contact with the suspect, who was thought to have barricaded himself inside.

Police attempted to speak with the suspect, but received no answer. Eventually, crews made entry into the home and discovered the suspect was dead from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The woman was transported to the hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the Monroe County Sheriff's Office at 734-243-7530.
