Police: Man Dragged Mother Of His Kids With SUV In Dearborn

DEARBORN (WWJ) - A habitual offender could spend the next decade behind bars after police say he attacked the mother of his children and drove away with her stuck in the car door.

Hassan Sayed, 34, was arraigned Wednesday on multiple charges including assault with a deadly weapon, fourth-degree child abuse, larceny and interfering with a crime report.

Dearborn police say Sayed dragged the woman around a city block last Sunday after forcing his way into the driver's seat of her SUV, with their 2- and 3-year-old children in the back seat.

The woman was initially driving the SUV with Sayed in the passenger's seat when the two started arguing. Eventually, the woman pulled over near Chase Road and Donald Street and ordered Sayed out of her vehicle as she stepped out to call police.

Surveillance footage shows Sayed pushing and hitting the woman before grabbing her phone and jumping back into the SUV. The woman, fearing for the safety of the children, then tried to pull Sayed out of the vehicle, according to police.

Sayed then put the vehicle in gear and drove away at a high rate of speed -- with the woman still hanging onto the side of the SUV -- while crossing into oncoming traffic lanes, police said.

Sayed continued driving for about one block before turning onto Alber Street, at which point the woman was able to reach the gear shifter and put the vehicle into park. Sayed then exited the vehicle and fled on foot before being apprehended by police.

The woman suffered minor injuries in the incident. The kids were not physically injured.

"Crimes of domestic violence are a continuing problem in our society," Police Chief Ronald Haddad said in a statement. "Ironically this type of case accentuates family tragedies during Domestic Violence Awareness month. There are often many silent victims in these families."

Sayed was ordered jailed on a $200,000 bond. If released before his Oct. 24 court date, Sayed must wear a tether and is barred from having contact with the victim.
