Police Looking For Crook Posing As Fire Inspector In Detroit [PHOTOS]

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police are looking for help to identify a man who posed as a fire inspector in order to steal from local businesses.

Police said the suspect, described as a white male in his 40s, entered a store in the area of E. State Fair and John R. in Detroit the morning of Tuesday, June 2, claiming he was there to inspect the fire extinguisher.

The clerk allowed the suspect behind the counter and later that day, he discovered his firearm missing.

Then, last Tuesday morning, the same man showed up at another store, this time in the 4600-block of Woodward Ave., again claiming to be there to check out the fire extinguisher. He was allowed access to a back room where the equipment was kept and this time made off with a large amount of cash.

Police say they're looking for a man with a fair complexion, around 5 feet 10 inches tall and 220 lbs. with long black hair and a gray goatee. He was wearing gray tee-shirt and blue jeans and was last seen driving away in a newer model, large, red pickup truck.

Police on Monday released security camera images of the suspect.

Anyone who recognizes the man in the photos, knows of his whereabouts, or has any information about these crimes are asked to call Detroit police investigators at 313-596-1140 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP. All callers to Crime Stoppers may remain anonymous.
