Police Investigating Death Of Newborn In Independence Township

INDEPENDENCE TOWNSHIP (WWJ)  - The Oakland County Sheriff's office is looking into the death of a newborn baby in Independence Township.

Police say the mother woke up to find her baby unresponsive after falling asleep while breastfeeding. The baby was transported to an area hospital where she was pronounced dead by a doctor.

The baby was just a few hours old. She was delivered by a midwife in the home at around 2:30 a.m. on Friday, and was last seen alive at 5:50 a.m.

The county medical examiner is investigating the baby's cause of death.
