Police Investigate After Dog Shot By Neighbor In Canton

CANTON (WWJ) -- Police in Canton are looking into the fatal shooting of a family pet on Saturday.

Canton Police Sergeant Dan Traylor said that he expects the investigation into the shooting death of the dog called Stewie will be completed by the end of the week.

"The homeowner alleged that he was being charged by the dog and that he discharged his firearm," Traylor said.

The family disputes that that dog was running at the neighbor, saying that the dog was running back toward an owner when he was shot.

"There's not a whole lot that we're willing to release at this time due to the investigation still being conducted," Traylor said. "We're still reviewing statements, etcetera, before we forward that information to the prosecutor."

The prosecutor will decide if any charges are filed in the case.
