Police Hope DNA Tests Will Help Identify 1996 Murder Victim

HIGHLAND PARK (WWJ/AP) - State police are hoping new DNA tests will help them identify a 1996 murder victim and bring them closer to solving the Detroit-area case.

The girl or young woman, believed to be between the ages of 15 and 25, was found May 20, 1996, in an alley on Cortland near the Lodge Freeway in Highland Park. Neighbors at the time told police they'd heard a gunshot before she was found.

She had a gunshot wound to the throat. No potential relatives came forward.

The body was unearthed in October from a suburban Detroit cemetery and is being stored at the Wayne County medical examiner's office, according to a report in the Detroit News.

State police Detective Sgt. Sarah Krebs says the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children in 2015 provided funding to have her exhumed.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-600-9205.
