Police: Dearborn Man Assaults Elderly Woman, Caught Fleeing Scene On Stolen Pink Bike

DEARBORN (WWJ) - A 23-year-old man is facing charges, accused of a robbery and assault on an elderly woman in a Dearborn neighborhood.

According to investigators, Hosam Al-Hussain of Dearborn was trying to steal a bicycle from a backyard, in the area of Hubbard St and Greenfield Rd. last Wednesday afternoon, when he was caught in the act.

When confronted by the resident, police say Al-Hussain pushed the woman to the ground and fled.

Police say the resident immediately called 911 and officers flooded the neighborhood, finding Al-Hussain — who matched the victim's description of the suspect — riding a pink bicycle away from the area. When he stopped and entered a garage, near Greenfield Rd and Paul St.,  he was taken into custody.

Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad says the victim did exactly the right thing.

"Thanks to the brave actions of this Dearborn resident and the speedy response by officers, this dangerous subject was located and taken off the streets," the chief said, in a statement. "This is a prime example of our community assisting the police department making the City of Dearborn a safer place."

Al-Hussain was arraigned in 19th District Court on charges of felony burglary, larceny and assault and battery. Bond was set at $900.

He's due back in court for a probably cause conference set for Friday, Sept. 23, following by a preliminary exam on Friday, Sept. 30.
