Police Bust Dog Fighting Ring In Inkster And Westland: 25 Dogs Seized, 5 Suspects Arrested

INKSTER (WWJ) - Police have busted a vicious dog fighting ring that included more that two dozen dogs across two cities.

Michigan State Police Lieutenant Mike Shaw said investigators submitted two warrant requests after receiving several tips about a possible dog fighting ring in Inkster and Westland. Troopers working in Inkster, along with the mobile narcotics enforcement team, executed both warrants Thursday night at two residences.

"We were able to rescue 25 dogs that were used in dog fighting, numerous amounts of different narcotics, including crack-cocaine, heroin and marijuana, $25,000 in dog fighting proceeds and also a large amount of dog fighting equipment," Shaw told WWJ's Laura Bonnell.

A group of suspects were also taken into custody.

"We arrested five people, four out of the Inkster residence and one out of Westland. They are currently being interviewed by our detectives," said Shaw. "Naturally, if there's other people or other parties involved, we definitely want to know about that."

Police say they hope the raids serve as a warning to anyone else engaging in similar illegal activity.

"Unfortunately, dog fighting is something that we see in a lot of urban areas in Michigan, especially in the metro Detroit area," said Shaw.

All of the dogs have been turned over to the Michigan Humane Society.
