Police: Baby Possibly Suffocated By Body Of Dead Mother

The Associated Press originally reported that the child killed was a boy, rather than a girl, relying on information from Michigan State Police. It was a 2-month-old girl, not a boy.

INKSTER, Mich. (AP) - Authorities are investigating the deaths of a 30-year-old woman and her 2-month-old daughter in their Inkster home, southwest of Detroit.

State police say Thursday that the woman's husband found the bodies Wednesday evening on a landing at the top of stairs leading to the home's second floor.

The woman was slumped over in a sitting position with the baby in her lap.

Police say it is believed that the child may have been suffocated when her mother slumped forward. They also say the woman had been suffering from undisclosed medical problems over the past two months.

The investigation is continuing and autopsies were to be performed.
