11 People Apprehended After Gun Battle In Drug Raid Gone Awry
INKSTER (WWJ) - Eleven people were taken into custody after getting into a gun battle with police who were trying to search their house in a drug investigation.
The incident unfolded around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday at a home on Colgate Street at Meadowdale Avenue, in a neighborhood near Beech Daly and Annapolis Street along the Inkster-Dearborn Heights border.
Westland police were executing a warrant in a drug bust at the home when multiple shots were fired from a full-auto AK-47 assault rifle as officers approached the porch. The officers took cover while returning fire and called for backup.
Once officers gained the upper hand on the situation, Westland police were able to take 11 people into custody, one of whom had to be talked out of the home. Police say miraculously, no one was injured in the crossfire.
Geraldine Stevens live just a few houses down from where the bullets were flying.
"I don't know what happened. I was sitting at the computer, I heard all these shots and I hit the floor and it just sounded like a war zone," Stevens told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "It scared me to death. It was horrible."
A perimeter was established and the Michigan State Police bomb squad arrived around 4 a.m. Thursday to make sure no one else was in the home. Robots were sent in to check the home before the all-clear was given about a half hour later.
Some residents near the scene were evacuated from their homes, while others were reportedly told to take shelter.
Police say the situation remains under investigation. Several of those taken into custody have already been released, pending further investigation.
