Police: 81-Year-Old Man In Wheelchair Struck By Vehicle Had Right Of Way

CANTON (WWJ) - Police say an elderly man who was injured after being struck by a vehicle while trying to cross a busy Canton road apparently had the right of way.

The accident happened around 5:45 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Ford and Morton Taylor roads, just west of I-275.

Police say an 81-year-old Canton man was in a motorized wheelchair, utilizing the crosswalk, when he was struck by a 2003 Toyota Camry that was attempting to make a right turn onto westbound Ford Road.

The man was taken to St. Joseph's Hospital in Ypsilanti for treatment and has since been released.

The other driver, a 71-year-old Canton resident, was uninjured.

Police say it appears that the pedestrian had the right of way. Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the crash, according to police.

The crash remains under investigation.
