Police: 2 Dead After Vehicle Crashes Into Kalamazoo River

BATTLE CREEK (WWJ/AP) - Police say two men have died after a vehicle crashed into the Kalamazoo River in southwestern Michigan.

The crash happened just after 4 a.m. Friday in Battle Creek. The car flipped and floated down the river to near the Washington Street bridge, according to Lt. James Martens.

"A road sergeant was driving in the area and he saw what he described as a flash. He checked out the area, believed that he had seen a vehicle but didn't know where it went to and then while looking in an area near the bridge, observed the vehicle float out from underneath the bridge on its top down the Kalamazoo River," Martens told WWJ's Beth Fisher.

Martens said the bodies of two men were found inside the vehicle after it was pulled from the water. They have not yet been identified, but are believed to be in their early 30s.

The crash happened near where a car went into the river on March 4. That vehicle floated away, prompting days of searching. It was found on Sunday by a fisherman. Police say they were told a 31-year-old man may have been driving the car, but a body wasn't found.

An investigation is ongoing.
