Police: 1 Person Dead After Car Chase Ends In Crash

WYANDOTTE (WWJ) -- A Downriver police chase ended in a fatal crash on Monday night.

The car chase involved Wyandotte police around 8:30 Monday, and ended when a driver nearly crashed into a restaurant in Lincoln Park.

Witnesses say the car flipped on its side and caught fire after hitting a pole.

Lincoln Park police told WWJ Newsradio 950 that the crash happened at Fort St. and Capitol Ave. and confirmed that one person was killed, though no details about the victim have been released.

Police say the passenger had no seat belt and was ejected, and as the vehicle flipped, it rolled over on top of him. He was declared dead at the scene.

The driver, a 33-year-old man who appears to be homeless, was friends with the victim. He was intoxicated, had drug paraphernalia on him, admitted that he smokes crack cocaine and had been drinking earlier in the day, according to police. He was taken into custody at the scene.

An investigation is ongoing.
