Plymouth-Canton District Closing Schools To Cut Costs

PLYMOUTH (WWJ) - The Plymouth-Canton School Board has decided to close two schools and re-purpose another as it works to cut costs.

After hearing from a number of parents and students who carried signs, including one that read "We Love Allen," the board voted on Tuesday to close Allen Elementary and the Tanger Special Education Center, both in Plymouth, next fall.

Members also voted to close Gallimore Elementary in Canton and re-purpose the facility as the center for the district's elementary Talented and Gifted program.

The vote came after the district commissioned a "facilities and boundary" study, which began in Aug. 2013. Based on the data, officials made their recommendation to close the schools. The decision is expected to save the district about $2 million a year.

As part of the recommendations, elementary and middle school boundaries will also be re-drawn.
