Plans Move Forward To Rename Detroit Streets For Stevie Wonder, Thomas 'Hitman' Hearns

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Plans are moving forward to rename sections of Detroit streets for musician Stevie Wonder and boxing great Thomas "Hitman" Hearns.

According to reports, a City Council committee on Thursday approved proposals to rename a section of Milwaukee Avenue near Woodward Avenue for Wonder and to rename a section of McGraw Avenue near Junction Street for Hearns.

Wonder, who rose to fame with Motown Records, is scheduled to play Joe Louis Arena on Saturday night. Hearns trained and fought in Detroit.

The committee also approved a proposal to rename Farnsworth Street near Woodward Avenue adjacent to the Detroit Institute of Arts for Eugene Gargaro Jr., the museum's board chairman. He helped protect the museum's collection from possible sale during Detroit's bankruptcy.
