Plane Crashes In Fog, Killing Canadian Pilot
KIMBALL TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Authorities say a 52-year-old Canadian man was attempting an instrument landing in the fog when his small plane crashed near a southeastern Michigan airport.
St. Clair County sheriff's Deputy Steve Campau says the plane crashed about 1:30 p.m. Wednesday in woods in Kimball Township near St. Clair County International Airport. It's about 55 miles northeast of Detroit.
Campau identifies the victim as Lawrence L. Zavitz of Watford, Ontario, about 30 miles east of Sarnia. Campau says that Zavitz kept his plane at the airport.
The deputy says the Twin Piper Seneca made an approach about 1:30 p.m. but missed the landing attempt.
Campau says multiple emergency agencies responded, and they located the wreckage about 5:30 p.m.
The deputy says the Federal Aviation Administration has joined the investigation.
