Plan Aims To Change Blight Into Detroit Agricultural Business

DETROIT (AP) — An event is scheduled to kick off a plan that will transform a blighted area on Detroit's eastside into what officials hope will be a thriving agricultural business.

Mayor Mike Duggan will join other city leaders Monday at the former Chene-Ferry Market shed to discuss RecoveryPark Farms.

The historic shed will be incorporated into the project which is expected to eventually encompass about 60 acres of land.

The plan includes creating jobs with full benefits for city residents faced with barriers to employment. They include people with criminal records, recovering addicts and those with low literacy rates.

RecoveryPark's long-term plans include hydroponic growing sites and fish farming.

The area is northeast of downtown and is predominantly vacant, but is home to a number of restaurants.
