People Mover Reopens After Bomb Scare In Greektown

DETROIT (WWJ) - Detroit police have given the all-clear after a suspicious package was discovered in Greektown, forcing the People Mover to temporarily shut down.

The situation unfolded just before 11 a.m. Friday outside of the People Mover station on Beaubien Street near Monroe Street.

Reporting live from the scene, WWJ's Vickie Thomas said the suspicious item in question was a burgundy gym bag that was left outside, next to the stairwell of the People Mover station.

Police, fire, bomb squad and emergency rescue crews responded to the scene as the surrounding area was blocked off to traffic. At that time, authorities made the decision to close down the People Mover.

After making sure the area was safe, the bomb squad X-rayed the bag -- which apparently contained clothing and posed no threat -- and police gave the all-clear around 12:30 p.m.

The People Mover is now back in regular service.

No injuries were reported.
