Pelosi, Other Lawmakers Visit Flint To See Pipe Replacement
FLINT, Mich. (AP) - House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and other members of Congress have visited Flint to get an update on efforts to help the city recover from lead-contaminated water.
The delegation was led by U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, a Democrat who represents Flint. Lawmakers met with residents, business leaders, and nonprofit groups Friday, and watched as crews replaced an old lead service line under a neighborhood street. Pelosi wore a hard hat.
The visit occurred a day after the Environmental Protection Agency was urged to strengthen its oversight of state drinking water systems in the wake of the lead crisis.
Flint's tap water became contaminated with lead in 2014 after officials switched to the Flint River to save money. The water wasn't properly treated to reduce corrosion.
