If you have a Twitter account, you have to make sure you always read what you have typed before you send it out to the public.
The New England Patriots decided to celebrate once they got 1 million followers on Twitter.
It didn't go exactly as planned.
We're saying thanks to @patriots' 1million followers w/ custom digital Pats jerseys - RT for yours! #1MillionPatriots pic.twitter.com/u2SfidCb9e

If you retweeted the Patriots, they would tweet out a digital jersey with your twitter handle. They should have figured you would get some people trying to be funny or just flat-out rude. That's exactly what they got.
One person tweeted to them... who probably never thought their tweet would get retweeted by the Patriots. The tweet involved IHATE and then a racial slur. Click HERE to see the tweet.
The Patriots went on to apologize on their twitter after their retweet went viral.
We apologize for the regrettable tweet that went out from our account. Our filtering system failed & we will be more vigilant in the future.

Once you put it out on Twitter it will always remain there one way or another. Hopefully they have learned from their mistake.
