Passenger Bike Ride Includes Pedalling And Pub

DETROIT (WWJ) - Exercising at the pub? Well ... it depends on your definition of exercise. Now you can extend your definition while touring the Motor City on bike.

HandleBar Detroit is a 16-passenger pedal-powered pub on wheels.

Co-owner Brian Lindsay, started HandleBar Indianapolis with his brother, Stephen, when Michigan laws wouldn't allow alcohol on the bike.

But now that Governor Snyder passed that law this summer, passengers will be able to bring their own beer, wine, and snacks on board in the spring.

"... the first stop is Campus Martius area and then it's up to the people where they want to go - there are two bars in the area within a block," said Brian.

While drinking on the bikes isn't allowed yet in Detroit - the bike tours began operating this weekend with BYO - beer and wines in place for the spring.

"It is a 2-hour tour," he says. "Usually it's about half the time is peddling and half the time is going into a bar and whatnot, but it's really up to the people peddling what they want to do.

"All four groups so far have been people who live in the metro Detroit area but haven't been downtown - in some cases - in two or three years. So, it's something that we feel is bringing the Handlebar downtown is bringing people that wouldn't normally be downtown to the area."

A designated driver navigates as you pedal your way around downtown Detroit, stopping at areas of interest, and if you're on this ride, most likely you'll be stopping at bars and restaurants.
