Opening Event Monday For New Version Of Detroit's Kronk Gym

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - The latest incarnation of Detroit's Kronk boxing gym debuts next week.

An opening event is set for Monday for a new version of the former gym of late Hall of Fame boxing trainer Emanuel Steward.

The Kronk Gym will operate from a church basement on the city's west side.

The original Kronk Gym opened under Steward in the early 1970s. It was closed in 2006 after it fell on tough times and vandals stole copper piping and wiring from the building. Steward moved the gym to another location and it was closed after his death in 2012.

The International Boxing Hall of Fame trainer worked with a long list of champions, including Thomas Hearns and Wladimir Klitschko.
