Two Dead In Four-Vehicle Crash On US-23

SUMMERFIELD TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -- Distracted driving may have been the cause of a crash that killed a woman and a 5-year-old child on US-23 today.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office says a 27-year-old man was driving a pick-up truck southbound near Summerfield Road while distracted when he rear-ended a Hyundai Elantra being driven by a 35-year-old Ohio woman.

The woman was then forced into the rear of a Toyota Solara as both vehicles came to rest. The man's pickup then collided with a fourth vehicle.

The woman and a 5-year-old child, who was in the backseat, were both killed in the wreck. There were no other injuries.

Police do not suspect alcohol was a factor. An investigation is ongoing.

The US-23 southbound lanes were closed because of the crash for most of the afternoon before recently being reopened.
