Officials: Man, 51, Dies While Swimming At High School Pool

GEORGETOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — Officials say a 51-year-old man has died after he had a heart attack while swimming at a high school pool in western Michigan.

The Grand Rapids Press and WOOD-TV report Tom Smart was participating in open swim at the Jenison High School pool on Sunday. Jenison Public Schools Superintendent Tom TenBrink says in a statement that pool lifeguards tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.

The school is located in Ottawa County's Georgetown Township.

Smart coached youth baseball and football teams and he officiated local baseball games. TenBrink says his death is a "huge loss" to the community.
