Officials Investigate Salmonella Outbreak At Detroit Hospital

DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - Officials say more than a dozen patients at a Detroit hospital have contracted salmonella and authorities are working to identify the source.

Henry Ford Hospital says 14 patients contracted the illness last week and those still hospitalized are being kept isolated as a precaution.

Officials say there's no evidence that the illnesses are food-related, and no new cases have been found this week.

Salmonella often is transmitted by food. A salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps after exposure. Rarely, salmonella can result in more serious ailments including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms.
