Officer Shot In Exchange Of Gunfire On Detroit's East Side

DETROIT (WWJ) -- A shooting on Detroit's east side has injured two people, including an officer, on Saturday evening. Police Chief James Craig told WWJ Newsradio 950 that a bullet grazed the officer's foot.

"It's unknown whether or not if it was self-inflicted to struck by the suspect," Craig said.

Craig said that officers responded to a call near Rosemary and Chalmers, got into an accident with another vehicle, then someone walking by started shooting at the officers.

"One of the police officers responded, exiting the vehicle, returned fire," Craig said. "However, during that brief exchange, the officer sustained a gunshot wound to his right or left foot."

The officer is expected to recover. A second person in the accident was also shot and is being treated at the hospital.

Police are canvassing that east side neighborhood for a suspect.
