Obama Grants Freedom To Detroit-Area Man Serving Life

DETROIT (AP) - A Detroit-area man sentenced to life in prison for a drug conspiracy in 1999 will be released later this year under an order by President Barack Obama.

Patrick Roberts is one of 46 people whose sentences were shortened Monday by the president.

Online records show the 65-year-old Roberts is in a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana. Court filings show he pleaded guilty to conspiring to distribute heroin, cocaine and marijuana.

Roberts got a life sentence because he had prior drug convictions. Prosecutors were willing to support a shorter sentence in exchange for information, but they say Roberts lied during many interviews.

Over the years, Roberts has filed many unsuccessful appeals.
