'No Particular Benchmarks' For Bonus Pay: DPS Emergency Manager Leaves With Another $50K

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Public Schools' third emergency manager left the job with bonuses from the state totaling $50,000.

The Detroit Free Press reports the Michigan Department of Treasury gave Jack Martin the performance bonus in two payments - the first for $23,000 in 2013 and the second for $27,000 around the time he stepped down in mid-January from his 18-month job.

The total was the maximum amount outlined in the state-appointed emergency manager's contract.

Terry Stanton, spokesman for the Department of Treasury, says in an email there were "no particular benchmarks" for the bonus pay. Stanton says Martin worked to stabilize enrollment, restored programs and sold or leased numerous unused or vacant properties.

Stanton says the decision was made after consulting with Gov. Rick Snyder's office. Martin had a $225,000-a-year contract.
