No Charges In Death Of Inmate At Wayne County Jail

DETROIT (AP) - No charges will be filed in the death of a Wayne County jail inmate.

Prosecutor Kym Worthy says there's no "medical connection" between Abdul Akbar's sudden death last fall and the aggressive actions of jail deputies eight days earlier.

The 59-year-old Akbar was restrained and placed in segregation after jail staff feared they would be hurt. Witnesses said Akbar grabbed computer equipment from a desk and threw it to the ground. His jaw was fractured during a struggle with deputies.

Days later, Akbar collapsed in his cell. Dr. Carl Schmidt says he performed an autopsy and discovered an enlarged heart. He says the earlier incident didn't play a role.

Akbar was in jail for illegal scrapping.
