Neighbor Leads Severely Burned Man To Safety After Explosion

DETROIT (WWJ) - One man was severely injured in a blaze that began as a home explosion on Detroit's east side Wednesday evening.

Fire crews from Detroit, Highland Park and Hamtramck responded to the two-alarm fire that also damaged two other houses off of John R near 7 Mile road.

One neighbor tells WWJ's Stephanie Davis that he was sitting in his kitchen with the fan on and the door open for more air when he heard the explosion and went to help his neighbor.

"We snatched him up and ran him across the street," said the neighbor, "by the time we got him over there everything was just burnt on him; his stomach, his back, his arms, his face, all his hair burnt out -- it was just tragic."

With temperatures in the high 80s, at least two firefighters suffered heat exhaustion.

They were treated at the scene with water and oxygen, and are expected to be okay.

DTE Energy is investigating.
