MSP Takes Over Investigation Involving Death Of Teen During Traffic Stop

DETROIT (WWJ) - A Lansing-area teenager is dead and a sheriff's deputy is under investigation, after a weekend traffic stop turned deadly.

Deven Guildford, 17, of Mulliken was pulled over by an Eaton County Sheriff Sergeant for what police say was a routine traffic stop around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

According to police at some point during the stop the driver and officer got into a physical struggle on M-43 near Cochran and Guildford was shot by the officer.

The investigation is now being handled by the Michigan State Police. Sgt. Jeremy Brewer says the traffic stop was anything but routine.

"A struggle had ensued between the sergeant and the driver of the vehicle -- during the struggle -- the sergeant did sustain some significant injures and fired his weapon -- the driver of the vehicle was deceased at the scene from his injuries," said Brewer.

The family did not want to comment when contacted.
