Motorcyclist Killed In Crash With Police Car In St. Clair Shores

ST. CLAIR SHORES (WWJ) - Authorities say a man was killed when his motorcycle collided with a police car in St. Clair Shores.

The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday on 8 Mile Road near Beaconsfield, between the Eastland Mall shopping center and I-94.

Police say  the officer was attempting to make a traffic stop on another vehicle when the collision occurred. However, it's not yet clear if the motorcycle was struck by the cruiser, or if the cruiser was struck by the motorcycle.

The motorcyclist, a 20-year-old St. Clair Shores man, was transported to the hospital where he later died. His name was not released.

Police insisted that the "tragic accident" was not the result of a police pursuit.

"Our city grieves for the family and their tragic loss of a loved one," police said in a statement. "We cannot undo the tragedy, but we can promise a full and complete investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash."

The case has been handed off to Michigan State Police for further review.
