Motorcyclist Dies After Losing Control, Crashing On Rural Monroe County Road

BERLIN TWP. (WWJ) - Officials say a 23-year-old motorcyclist has died after he was thrown from his bike when he apparently lost control on a rural Monroe County road.

The accident happened around 7:40 a.m. Friday on U.S. Turnpike Road just north of Haggerman Road in Berlin Township.

The Monroe County Sheriff's Office said Cody Poff was driving northbound on U.S. Turnpike Road when he lost control of his 2015 Yamaha motorcycle.

"For unknown reasons, the motorcycle traveled off the right side of the roadway and entered a ditch before striking a road sign post and a metal fence," Sheriff Dale Malone said in a statement.

Poff, who was wearing a helmet, was ejected from his motorcycle and suffered serious injuries. He was transported to Beaumont-Trenton hospital where he was pronounced dead just before 9:30 a.m., according to police.

Investigators say speed appears to be a factor in the crash, which remains under investigation.

Police are looking to speak with anyone who might have witnessed the crash. Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 734-240-7493.
