Motorcade Travels Across Detroit To Protest Violence
DETROIT (WWJ/AP) - A motorcade has made its way across Detroit as part of an anti-violence demonstration.
The Rev. Ovella Davis, an event organizer, estimated more than 300 cars took part in this afternoon's event called "Thou Shall Not Kill." The lineup started at Grand River and Livernois before ending at King High School where a youth rally against violence was held.
The event drew the support of several local funeral homes, whose directors told one newspaper they are tired of burying victims of gun violence. Hearses and motorcycles from local clubs were part of the procession.
In 2012, then-Detroit Mayor Dave Bing proclaimed the 22nd of each month as "No Violence Day in Detroit." The effort was sparked by concerns about homicides and other violent crime in the city.
This comes during a weekend of gun violence in Detroit, where nine were hurt in four separate shootings.
