Mother Sentenced To Jail After Drugs Mailed To Son In Prison

TRAVERSE CITY (WWJ/AP) - A 43-year-old northern Michigan woman will spend time in jail for trying to smuggle a prescription drug behind a postage stamp on a letter mailed to her son who was incarcerated in a state prison.

Jamie Rise, of Lake City, was sentenced Friday in Traverse City to a year in jail and three years' probation, according to The Grand Rapids Press.

Rise pleaded guilty to conspiracy to deliver or manufacture a controlled substance.

Staff at the Pugsley Correctional Facility in Grand Traverse County in northern Michigan found Suboxone in a thin film layer after intercepting the mail. The drug blocks cravings for heroin and painkillers.

The newspaper says the scheme was revealed through recorded calls between Rise and her son, 26-year-old Robert Eling, who is imprisoned on drug charges.
