Mother Comes To Grips With Death Of Son, Killed By Semi Truck That Struck His Wheelchair

"On Mother's Day I saw him, he gave me a hug and kiss."

DETROIT (WWJ) Camilla McCoy hasn't seen her 27-year-old son since Mother's Day. He was killed at 4 a.m. Tuesday when the wheelchair he was in was struck by a semi-truck on a Detroit street.

The driver fled, and police are still searching for him. Police say they have surveillance video from the fatal incident and they hope to learn more about the semi driver in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, McCoy is preparing a funeral service, and due to her limited income two organizations are helping her out. The James H. Cole Home For Funerals is picking up the cost of the chapel, priest and organist; Olivia Loving Hearts is footing the rest of the bill.

Olivia Loving Hearts founder Mark Slater says it's an honor to help.

"I feel great when you can do something for the community and to help a family in need is very gratifying," he said to WWJ's Mike Campbell.

McCoy is just starting to come to grips with her son's death, and said having just lost her job she had no idea how she would pay for a funeral.
