More Than 7,000 Bicyclists Expected At 14th Annual Tour de Troit

DETROIT (AP) - An event billed by organizers as Michigan's biggest cycling ride is taking off in Detroit.

About 7,000 people are expected to ride Saturday in the 14th annual Tour de Troit.

Only 30 people were involved at the first Tour de Troit.

The 30-mile ride will start in Detroit's Corktown, pass through several historic neighborhoods and circle Belle Isle. A 62-mile ride for advanced riders also will be held.

The event has raised nearly $200,000 for greenways and other non-motorized projects in Detroit, helping develop more than 17 miles of bike lanes.

Detroit has become a hotpot for bicycling in recent years. A weekly ride called Slow Roll Detroit also is popular, often attracting 3,000 or more cyclists on Monday evenings.
