More Than 323,000 Sign Up For Michigan Medicaid Expansion

LANSING (WWJ/AP) - More than 323,000 Michigan residents have enrolled in the state's expanded Medicaid program since it launched earlier this year.

The update Thursday came from Gov. Rick Snyder, who says Healthy Michigan Plan enrollment has surpassed its first-year goal of 322,000. The program extends health care benefits to a half-million low-income residents. Enrollment started April 1.

Michigan reports more than 230,000 of 323,022 enrollees have picked a health plan and says enrolment is going smoothly. In a statement, Snyder said the effort will give residents "health care coverage they need to lead healthy, productive lives."

Applicants must be between 19 and 64, not already eligible for Medicaid and make up to 133 percent of the federal poverty level. That's roughly $16,000 for single person and $33,000 for a family of four.

"Enrolling more than 322,000 people shows that Michiganders are ready to make positive changes for their health and their communities," said MDCH Director James Haveman, in a media release.

"Reaching our goal ahead of schedule is great news for the physical and financial health of our state. Thank you to our business and health care partners for helping us meet the demand in our communities."
