Monroe Extends School Year Due To Severe Winter Weather

MONROE (AP) - Students in Monroe Public Schools are among those facing a longer than usual school year due to this winter's severe weather.

The district announced Monday it would hold classes at least through June 18 after it lost 15 days of school due to weather. Originally, the school year was to have ended June 6.

In February, the State Board of Education encouraged Michigan public school districts that exceed six missed days to replace lost time with full days of instruction.

State law allows a district to have six snow days. That has been pressed this year in districts across the state that closed because of heavy snow, dangerously cold temperatures or both. Any beyond six must be replaced for a district to get full state funding.
