Monroe County Police Investigate Possible Road Rage Shooting

ERIE TWP (WWJ) - Monroe County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a potential case of road rage after shots were fired following a minor traffic crash in Erie Township.

Investigators say they were called to the area of Luna Pier Road, just east of Baycreek Road, around 6:15 p.m. Monday after receiving reports that a man was shooting at a passing vehicle.

Deputies arrived on the scene and spoke with a 61-year-old man, who said he was just involved in a minor traffic crash. The man also told police he fired a pistol while standing outside his vehicle to get the other driver's attention after their side mirrors bumped while driving in opposite directions.

Police say the opposing vehicle was not struck by the bullets and no injuries were reported. Investigators recovered three spent pistol rounds from the scene and confiscated the man's weapon.

The man, a valid Michigan Concealed Pistol License holder, was arrested on the scene and lodged at the Monroe County Jail. Investigators are seeking criminal charges against the man, whose name was not released, for weapon related violations.

The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call 734-240-7567.
