DETROIT (WWJ) - Authorities say a 6-year-old Detroit boy who went missing Friday afternoon was apparently locked inside his west side elementary school.

Malek Nelthrope was found safe and sound Saturday morning inside Bagley Elementary School on Curtis Street, in a neighborhood near 7 Mile Road and Livernois Avenue.

Malek was reported missing Friday when a relative arrived to pick him up from school around 3:40 p.m., but he never showed.

Authorities spent all night searching for the boy and Detroit police even conducted a sweep of the school, but found no signs of Malek. It wasn't clear how he was finally discovered.

"We are grateful that the student has been safely located after apparently spending the night in the school," Steven Wasko, Detroit Public Schools spokesperson, said in a statement. "We will investigate the circumstances upon which this happened."

When contacted for comment, a police spokesperson said he could only confirm that Malek was found safe.

An investigation is ongoing.
