Mike Bishop Victory Keeps 8th House Seat For GOP
LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Ex-Republican state Sen. Mike Bishop has defeated Democrat Eric Schertzing to keep Michigan's open 8th U.S. House seat for the GOP.
Bishop won Tuesday's election and will take over for longtime U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers. Rogers represented the central Michigan district for 14 years and gained prominence as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. He decided not to seek an eighth two-year term.
Bishop served in the state House in 1998-2002 and state Senate in 2003-2011. The 46-year-old Brighton Republican is chief legal officer of International Bancard Corp.
Schertzing has been Ingham County treasurer since 2001.The 52-year-old East Lansing resident also was an aide to then U.S. Rep. Bob Carr.
Libertarian James Weeks II, the Green Party's Jim Casha and the Natural Law Party's Jeremy Burgess also ran.
