Michigan Would Get 'Tax Holidays' If Lawmaker Has Way

LANSING (WWJ) - A state representative wants to create tax holidays in Michigan to save people money.

Republican Lee Chatfield of Levering has introduced legislation that would allow residents to buy back-to-school clothes and supplies without having to pay Michigan's six percent sales tax. The tax holidays would also be used for camping, fishing and hunting equipment, as well as Pure Michigan products.

Chatfield said it's time for Michigan to join at least 14 others states offering their residents a break this year. He said it's a way to help improve the overall state economy.

"I believe hard-working parents deserve a break, and this bill will be a boost for tourism and outdoor recreation which are driving forces in Northern Michigan and our statewide economy," Chatfield said in a statement.

The bill would establish three sales tax holidays in Michigan during 2016:

• June 3-5: Pure Michigan tourism products
• September 2-5: Back-to-school supplies and clothing
• November 4-6: Camping, fishing and hunting equipment

The bill has been referred to the House Committee on Tax Policy for further consideration.
