Michigan Tech Cancels Regional Ski Event Due To Lack Of Snow

HOUGHTON, Mich. (AP) - A continued lack of snow in Michigan's typically snowy Upper Peninsula has forced the rare cancellation of more ski races.

Michigan Technological University announced it cancelled U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association regional qualifying events scheduled for Saturday and Sunday on the Houghton campus. The races were to be held as a qualifier for U.S. Junior Nationals and a prelude to the U.S. Nationals scheduled for the school's Nordic Training Center Jan. 3-9.

Michigan Tech says it will make a decision later on whether to host the national event.

Northern Michigan had to call off its NMU Wildcat Open set for last weekend. The Marquette school's Nordic ski teams delayed their season opener until the Houghton event, but now - weather permitting - plan to start in early January.
