Michigan State Welcomes Home Its Rose Bowl Champs

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State University has welcomed back the Spartans following their Rose Bowl victory.

The Lansing State Journal reports that the players arrived back on campus about 8:30 p.m. Thursday after a flight delay.

The East Lansing school's athletics department sponsored a Thursday night rally at the Skandalaris Football Center.

No. 4 Michigan State beat No. 5 Stanford 24-20 Wednesday night.

East Lansing Fire Department Lt. Chuck Gagnier says it was "fairly quiet" in the hometown of the Spartans afterward. WLNS-TV says police sent out extra patrols and there were reported fires, mostly furniture burned outside.

Last month, a rowdy celebration of Michigan State's victory over Ohio State in the Big Ten championship included dozens of fires and prompted arrests.
